Lingerie Price Impacted by Cotton Cost Increase

25 / 10 / 2010

The price of cotton has recently exploded to record highs. In the US, today's trading saw the price surge to a 140 year high of $1.2469 a pound. In the past five days, the overall price of cotton has risen by thirteen percent.

The reason for the price increase is the ongoing demand from China and India. Combined with the devastating floods in Pakistan (one of the leading producers of Cotton), and US farmers switching to growing crops with a higher profit yield, demand has out sourced supply.

This will spell bad news for consumers of lingerie. Many lingerie items are made from cotton; such as Stella McCartney's new 'green lingerie' range, which is made from organic cotton. In fact, many design house have recently launched a range of 'green' 'organic' cotton lingerie.

What is certain, is that the higher price of production will be passed onto the consumer. If you are a purchaser of cotton lingerie, perhaps it is time to switch to lingerie made from silk or chiffon. The higher price of cotton will probably become more apparent in cheaper items.
