It will depend upon whether the item you are returning is faulty or not. If the item is not faulty, then a receipt is generally required for a consumer to comply with a retailers returns policy. However, if the item you are returning is faulty, you will only have to have proof of purchase, such as a credit or debit card statement. You should return the item to the retailer and not the manufacturer of the item. The purchase contract/agreement was with the retailer, and it is their legal responsibility to deal with the matter.
