Wedding Lingerie

The most traditional of all wedding lingerie is the garter. It has been worn by newlywed brides for centuries. After the wedding service, it's traditional for the groom to remove the garter, and then throw it to a single male guest.

Which is the same custom that sees a bride throw a bouquet of flowers to a single female guest. However, the tradition of throwing the garter has waned, and, present day, is rarely on the itinerary of a wedding.

Historically, the throwing of a garter was in the belief of good luck. The practice did not have any sexual connotations, although this confusion has probably led to its demise.

At the reception, the male who caught the garter, and the female who caught the bouquet of flowers, would traditionally share the second dance after the bridal couple.

A wedding garter often features a strip of blue material, the colour blue is believed to bring good luck to newlywed couples. Apart from the garter, there is no other traditional item of lingerie worn by a bride.

One difference between everyday lingerie and bridal bras, suspender belts, stockings, knickers etc, is that wedding lingerie is traditionally white. This is to match the bridal dress and to signify purity for a wedding night.
