Fridge Freezers

A fridge freezer is a combination of a refrigerator, usually referred to as a 'fridge', and a deep freeze. The most common configuration for a fridge freezer is in a vertical alignment. A deep freezer is placed at the bottom and a refrigerator is placed on top of it. In ratio, the deep freeze is usually smaller, taking up 3/8 of the total height.

While, for the most part, the standard configuration (outlined above) has dominated domestic sales of fridge freezers in the UK, a new, and larger configuration has come to prominance and generated sales. Referred to as an 'American' style fridge freezer, it's dimension are larger than that of a traditional fridge freezer.

Instead of the fridge and freezer being placed on top of each other, to save space, the fridge and freezer are placed side by side. Therefore, the width of the appliance is nearly twice the size of a conventional fridge freezer. The advantage of such an appliance is the additional storage space.

While the configuration of a fridge freezer will effect it's dimensions, it will not dictate it's exact measurements. There are no standard dimensions for a fridge freezer. Depth, height and width are the three measurements. Generally speaking, the depth of a fridge freezer can vary from 47cm to 72cm, the height from 116cm to 202cm, and the width from 48cm to 75cm.

Fridge freezers are categorised by a number of a factors. Chief amongst them is energy efficiency. Fridge freezers need to be constantly powered, so saving on energy usage can really add up over a year long period. Especially when you take into account the lifespan of the appliance. Fridge freezers are graded by a number of regulators. Regulators usually provide gradings from A-G. A being the most efficient, and G the least. Due to fridge freezers becoming increasing efficient, there are now A+, A++ and AA grading.

While fridge freezers are classed as 'white goods', due to historically being painted in white, not all fridge freezers are painted in white nowadays. The most common alternatives to white are black, inox, brushed steel, red, pink, cream, green, orange, blue graphite, silver and stainless steel.

When it comes to features, the following are the most commonly implemented, automatic fridge defrost, fast freeze facility, frost free freezer compartment, a warning system for a high temperature malfunction, reversible doors, twin compressors, ice and water dispenser.

While many manufacturers have either merged or being purchased by other manufacturers, there is still a good number of brands to pick from. Some of which are, Baumatic, Beko, Bosch, Bush, Candy, Hoover, Hotpoint, Liebheer, Haier, Indesit, Lec, LG, Samsung, Siemens, Miele, Neff, and Whirlpool.
