Interconnects

An example of budget interconnect cabling, which is not fit for purpose for any serious audiophile, however, the Gold plated RCAs have been optimised for signal transfer.

The humble interconnect is an oft overlooked, but, essential part of any hifi kit. A general rule of thumb has always been that you should spend between 10-15% of your hifi's budget on interconnects. Therefore, you should be looking to spend, at a minimum, between £50-100 pounds, or £200 and above on the cream of interconnects. On occasion, manufacturers will prepackage their unit (amp, CD player etc) with some interconnect cabling, on the whole it should be discarded, it's worthwhile keeping incase of an emergency, but, on the whole, it's cabling which is not fit for purpose. You may ask why you need to spend so much on cabling, the answer is three fold, quality cables / interconnect provide the following,

  1. Cabling covered with a material which shields and reduces interference from outside forces.
  2. An inner cable core (copper) which is plated from low electrical resistance metals such as silver.
  3. An interconnect plug which is plated with low resistance metals such as gold and silver.

The three attributes listed above will ensure a more finely detailed, transparent, superior and realistic sound quality.
