Two Way Speaker Sets

Two way speakers systems can be placed within two broad categories,

  1. The big daddy of speakers, the floor stander provides a large amount of bass to add overall scale to sound reproduction. Floorstanding
  2. a pair of bookshelf speakers, which, odd as the name would suggest, sound better on a stand than a book shelf. Bookshelf

As you would logically conclude, the floorstanding speaker is the larger of the two, well, for it's vertical dimension. One of the key benefits of a floorstanding speaker is it's capability of producing bass and overall scale. However, a larger speaker does not always equate into a better speaker. Many bookshelf speakers can musically out perform their larger floorstanding cousins, who focus too heavily on blowing away the listener with overpowered and unbalanced bass and treble. When considering which type of speaker to buy, you should consider the room which the speaker will be placed within. A small room will not be able to handle or do justice to most floorstanding speakers. It's important to note that speakers can take up to 40 hours before they perform optimally, where you place your speakers will have a large impact upon the sound quality, and that bookshelf speakers sound better on a speaker stand rather than on a bookshelf.
