| There are two popular types of vinyl records, a 33rpm long play record, and a 45rpm short play record, there is also a rare 78 vinyl record. Turntables are not capable of playing each of these vinyl records without altering their internal mechanics or electronic settings. A belt drive turntable needs to move it's belt to another pulley, whereas a direct drive turntable needs to make an electronic adjustment in it's settings. Not all turntables support the ability to switch speed to a 45 or 78 record. Due to the 33rpm record being the most common type of vinyl record, it is the de facto standard setting for virtually all modern turntables.
