Washing machine, an analysis of price - 2009

With the credit crunch biting the pocket of many UK households, consumers will be price conscious if they are required to buy a new washing machine in 2009. This page attempts to examine the cheapest current prices for washing machines in a variety of price ranges.

The washing machine is the most popular appliance for laundry and cleaning tasks. When it comes to the amount of models to pick from, there are more washing machines for sales than tumble dryers or dishwashers. Hopefully this will convert in a wider breadth of budget and entry level machines. And a more healthy competition between manufacturers, resulting in lower prices.

Lets examine the facts. During the summer months of 2009 there was (in the region) 140 washing machine models for sale (only counting the major manufacturers such as Bosch, Hotpoint, Indesit and Siemens). Only a handful of machines cost less than £200, and only a handful of machine cost more than £1000. The percentage of machine in each category could be expressed as,

  • £200 - £310 - 20%
  • £310 - £410 - 40%
  • £410 - £510 - 15%
  • £510 - £760 - 15%
  • £760 - £1000 - 10%

As you can see, there are a good number of machine for sale in each price category. But by far the largest price category is between £310-410.

The good news is, even washing machines in the £200-£310 price bracket tend to have a good wash grade, efficiency grade and spin efficiency grade. The bang you can expect for your buck is provided below.

  • £200 - £310
    • Average rating
      • Wash grade: A
      • Energy efficiency grade: A
      • Spin efficiency grade: B
  • £310 - £410
    • Average rating
      • Wash grade: A
      • Energy efficiency grade: A+
      • Spin efficiency grade: A
  • £410 - £510
    • Average rating
      • Wash grade: A
      • Energy efficiency grade: A++
      • Spin efficiency grade: B

The more espensive price categories do not tend to produce superior grading rating. Therefore you may ask, why do they cost more than the other machines?

The more expensive machines tend to be made by premium brands such as Siemens and Miele. Who have a reputation for building reliable and long lasting machines.

They also tend to look better. Finally, they usually have a few more wash programmes and fancy computer systems. But, what is clear, you can purchase a handy little machine for under £300.
