Energy efficient freezer

As part of the European Union's 'Energy Label' regulations, all freezers sold in the UK are given a rating from 'A+' to 'G'. Obviously, the 'A+' is given to appliances which use the least amount of electricity per year.

Apparently, an 'A' grade freezer can save a home owner over forty pounds per year, compared to using a 'G' grade freezer.

However, there are other energy efficiency grading systems and logos. Perhaps the most recognisable of these is provided by the 'Energy Star' organisation.

Their logo is given to freezers which contain superior compressors, insulation, and temperature and defrost systems. An 'Energy Star' freezer will be around 50% more efficient than unregulated models before 1993, 40% more than models before 2001, and 20% more than currently regulated freezers.

In America they have recently created a Government scheme to encourage citizens to buy a new energy efficient freezer, and recycle their old one. You can read all about this scheme at recyclemyoldfridge.com.

There are also a few tips to help improve efficiency,

  • A freezer should be placed in a cool, dark and dry place.
  • There should not be any other appliances or heat sources near the freezer.
  • For the coils and other mechanics to 'breath', leave space all around the freezer. It should not be placed directly touching a cabinet or wall.
  • Door seals should be checked to make sure they are air tight.
  • The freezer door should be left open for a bare minimum of time.
