Line-level-only amplifiers

Line-level-only refers to amplifiers which are primarily designed for use with CD players, tape decks and tuners. Line-level-only amplifiers are not designed for use with a phono/turntable/record player. Line-level is a phrase which refers to the voltage level of CD players, tape decks and tuners, which differs to that from a turntable. Manufacturer's make line-level only amps because it's simpler and cheaper, a quality phono input is more complex to design and implement. If you have purchased a line-level only amplifier by accident, and wish to connect it to a turntable, then it may be possible to buy a phono stage (also known as a preamplifier). The preamplifier/phono stage should be able to convert a space set of sockets into a phono input. However, it would be wise to ask the manufacturer of your amplifier, or a technician, before going ahead with the purchase of a preamp.
